Country Head/Regional General Manager, Papua New Guinea

Country Head/Regional General Manager, Papua New Guinea
Westpac Institutional Bank- Papua New Guinea-Port Moresby, Australia (Papua New Guinea)

Job Description

Westpac is proud to be Paupua New Guinea's (PNG's) first bank. We opened our first branch there in 1910. Since then we have invested significantly and continuously in technology and our distribution network to increase our market share position and to become the undisputed number one bank for customer advocacy, depth of customer relationships, positive social impact, sustainable business growth, and most skilled and engaged people.

Our business in PNG operates as a fully 'end to end' bank. As a majority-owned subsidiary of Westpac Banking Corporation there is a formal Board governance structure with two non-executive independent directors. The key functions of finance, treasury and financial markets, risk and HR are performed in-country with strong links to the Westpac Pacific team in Sydney. We have more than 25 ex-pats on the ground in senior management and 12 senior relationship management roles. In addition, we have a 'dynamic' corporate and institutional bank, transactional banking, and portfolio management team based in Sydney that primarily support the PNG business.

PNG is the key growth opportunity for Westpac Pacific in terms of growing our retail customer base through electronic channels, leveraging WIB capability for opportunities in the natural resources sector and generating revenue from transactional banking and trade flows. PNG is an emerging market and, despite perceptions, is an independently wealthy country with considerable natural resources. GDP growth has exceeded 10% for the past three years. This is anticipated to slow following the completion of the US$15 billion Liquefied Natural Gas facility sponsored by ExxonMobil but regardless of this growth is still expected to exceed that of other major economies in the world.

The Regional General Manager - PNG role is located in Port Moresby and is regarded as a very senior position and has a significant profile within Westpac Institutional Bank and our Corporate and Institutional Bank. Our expatriate roles in the Pacific have frequent turnover as the secondment period is two years with the option to extend to three years. We are always looking for high calibre people to strengthen our workforce, bring new ideas to ensure we remain relevant, innovative, proactive and capable as a business. The RGM role compliments the key development components for future General Managers.

The Country Head is accountable for ensuring the right people are deployed into the right roles, to best meet the needs of the customer base and to ensure a sustainable focus on sales and service excellence throughout their local team. The Country Head will provide inspirational leadership to their sales and distribution team.

We are seeking applications from seasoned commercial/corporate bankers with at least 5 years of experience in leading business relationship teams of at least 10 people and a proven track record in driving business performance through strategic competence and effective people leadership. In return, we offer a great work environment where you'll feel respected and valued. You'll be rewarded with a competitive salary and benefits package and the satisfaction of working with Westpac - helping us help customers better than ever before.

Westpac is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from men and women of all ages.
