Barrick (Niugini) Limited, the operator of the Porgera Mine, is part of the Barrick Gold Corporation group of companies which has interests in mines in Australia, the Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea and exploration interests throughout the region.
Position Objective
We seek to appoint an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join the Porgera Team.
Reporting directly to the Geotechnical Superintendent, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for the following:
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Undertake and supervise the day to day core geotechnical activities for the open pit, underground, waste dumps, and mine infrastructure; including geotechnical investigations, data collection and management, monitoring schedule, design and analysis and reporting.
  • Responsible for maintaining all equipment for investigation programs in good working order and maintaining associated supplies in sufficient stock.
  • Participation and input into mid and long term design programs for the open pit, underground waste dumps and mine infrastructure.
  • In-house training of junior technical staff in monitoring and inspection methods, use of computing systems, geotechnical logging/mapping techniques, design and analysis of data/results and other geotechnical skills.
  • Promote awareness to work safety through personal example and ensure all work carried out under their direction follows established safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Assist the Geotechnical Superintendent with implementation of change management initiatives and other business improvement projects.
To be suitable for this role, you will possess the following:
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within a multi-disciplined mine geotechnical engineering team in a medium to large operation
  • Minimum 5 years experience in mining industry, geotechnical engineering with exposure to geotechnical investigation, laboratory testing, instrumentation, design and reporting skills
  • Significant experience in open pit and underground production engineering in a gold mining operation
  • Tertiary Qualifications in Engineering or Science preferably with a Geotechnical or Geological Major
  • Current Drivers Licence
The position is fly in/fly out from Cairns on a 16/12 roster. The company will subsidise on-travel airfares paid to commute to and from Cairns for each work roster.
This position offers a competitive salary package in line with qualifications and experience.
