Senior Process Engineer II
Joule Fuels, B.V.- Greater Boston Area

Job Description

Senior Process Engineer II

JOB FUNCTION/PURPOSE:

The Senior Process Engineer will spearhead a range of activities related to the definition and deployment of efficient, eco-friendly, and economic, fully-integrated processes for the production of photosynthetically derived fuels. Contributions will be required across the tech transfer, deployment, and commercial operations support spectrum.
The successful applicant will be charged with identifying and evaluating fully integrated process configurations, identifying and assessing the applicability of process equipment, and optimizing process performance, operability, and economics. The process engineer will develop standard engineering documentation (PFDs, PIDs, mass and energy balances) and contribute to efforts to develop cost-of-goods models. These activities may be either self-performed or completed in conjunction with external engineering support.
The successful applicant will have a hands-on, practical approach to problem solving with a solid chemical engineering background and the ability to function as both an individual and group contributor. Effective oral and written communication skills are prerequisite given the need to continually exchange information with a variety of groups with the company. The ideal candidate is someone who develops new ideas, learns on the fly and is excited by technical challenges and aggressive time lines. Previous experience in operating plants and technology transfer is desired.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop industrially deployable fully integrated processes for Joule’s target products
  • Integrate information from key stakeholders into the process design by maintaining a cross-functional perspective and while effectively communicating with other groups within the company
  • Plan, oversee and coordinate efforts of internal and external engineering resources, including engineering contractors
  • Complete mass and energy balances across unit operations and spearhead development of integrated mass and energy models
  • Execute pinch point or similar analyses to define cost effective energy integration opportunities
  • Evaluate site specific design requirements while leveraging site specific resources
  • Assist with cost-of-goods, project specific economic, and feasibility analyses
  • Development of engineering documentation, including: process flow diagrams (PFDs), process and instrumentation diagrams (PIDs), equipment lists, process descriptions, equipment specifications, sequence of operations, etc.
  • Oversee internal and external equipment testing
  • Identify areas of process risk; identify, assess, and implement risk mitigation strategies
  • Assist with initial startup and operation of production facilities, including development of SOPs, participation in HAZOP reviews, etc.
  • Identify opportunities/risks for consideration by R&D organization

Desired Skills & Experience

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will be a high energy, enthusiastic self-starter with a solid chemical/process engineering background. A Master’s degree in chemical engineering or a related field with ten or more years of relevant experience is required. Relevant experience includes fuel ethanol production, biodiesel production, chemical refining, and industrial fermentation.

In addition an ideal candidate will possess several of the following skills/attributes:

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a cross-functional team on complex technical projects. Internally, groups could include: Process Development, Engineering, Production, Maintenance, Bioprocess, and Biology. Externally, groups could include: Engineering firms, Vendors, etc.
  • Experience with and/or in engineering firms as client or process lead
  • Understanding of a broad range of chemical processing unit operations (e.g. solids separation, distillation, stripping, etc)
  • Strong knowledge of P&ID development and documentation processes
  • Previous exposure to biologically based processes
  • Proficiency with process modeling and numerical analysis software (e.g. Excel, Matlab, Aspen)
  • Ability to work well in a team as well as independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong communication, technical writing, and presentation skills
  • Proficiency for multitasking in a fast-paced start-up environment
  • Previous experience in technology transfer
  • Previous experience in operating plants
  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally to interface with contractors/vendors and to assist with plant construction/startup/commissioning. Extent of travel will vary during project life-cycle.

About Joule

Joule is advancing a technology platform for Liquid Fuel from the Sun™, expected to eclipse the scale, productivity and cost efficiency of any known alternative to fossil fuel today. Its transformative Helioculture™ platform directly and continuously converts sunlight and waste CO2 to infrastructure-ready diesel, ethanol or commodity chemicals with no dependence on biomass feedstocks, downstream processing or precious natural resources. Joule has successfully pilot-tested its platform for over two years, initiated operations at its SunSprings™ demonstration plant, and launched a global subsidiary, Joule Fuels, to deploy fuel production sites worldwide. At full-scale commercialization, Joule expects to deliver renewable fuels and chemicals in unrivaled volumes, at highly competitive costs, with a fraction of the land required for biofuels derived from agricultural feedstocks or algal biomass. Joule is privately held and has raised over $110 million in funding to date. The company is headquartered in Bedford, Massachusetts with operations in Hobbs, New Mexico; and The Hague, Netherlands.
