The opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Drill and Blast Engineer, based at our coal operations, Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW), to join our Dragline Drill and Blast team and design, schedule, monitor and report drilling and blasting across MTW whilst developing the engineers in your team.

Located 15 km south-west of Singleton in the heart of the Hunter Valley region in New South Wales, Mount Thorley Warkworth supplies high quality thermal and semi-soft coking coal for export markets. The surrounding region offers an attractive lifestyle which includes agriculture, wine trails and gourmet food which complement the regions' natural beauty.

Working at MTW will give you the opportunity to further your Drill and Blast career in a large open cut environment working with a well-established team of Supervisors, Drillers, Shot firers and fellow Mining Engineers.

What the role entails

This position is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly ambitious individual. Residentially based in Hunter Valley and reporting to the Superintendent – Dragline Drill and Blast, you will be:
  • Managing Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) requirements for the blasting operations
  • Designing and scheduling drill and blast to meet business and legislative requirements
  • Conducting regular field visits of drill and blast operations to ensure high quality standards and accurate implementation of plans
  • Developing positive relationships with all stakeholders and maintaining them through effective communication and consultation
  • Collating statistics for all drill and blast operations
  • Developing and implementing blasting improvement programs
What you will need for this role

To succeed in this exciting and challenging role, you will have:
  • A tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or other related field
  • Experience as a Drill and Blast engineer in an open cut environment
  • Exposure to 3D software packages and databases (Minex/Minescape) to support blast pattern design
  • Understanding of blasting management practices for noise, vibration and fume
