Technologies Development Engineer - Energy Technologies Institute- Birmingham, United Kingdom

Technologies Development Engineer
Energy Technologies Institute- Birmingham, United Kingdom

Job Description

Smart Systems and Heat

SSH is one of the key ETI project activities. The smart systems project will design and subsequently demonstrate in a mass-market trial the delivery of smart low-carbon energy services in domestic and other buildings. These services should fulfil consumer needs and enable value to be claimed by all actors in the chain.
The activity is broadly split into two phases. The first phase involves multiple parallel and highly interdependent work packages with the resulting aim of generating concept designs of a smart energy system that would be widely applicable across the UK. The first phase will additionally develop a Design Manual and accompanying design tools and specifications that will be utilised in the delivery of the concept design in specific locations. The second phase involves the detailed design, build and operation in a large scale field demonstration of a smart energy system to provide both technical and commercial validation of the concept designs.

Role Purpose

To be the technical lead analysing the technical, financial and commercial aspects of technologies relating to smart systems and heat and the opportunities for development

Principal Accountabilities

To build and maintain the ETI understanding of technologies relating to smart systems and heat, to translate that understanding into quantitative data for the purposes of analysis and to identify opportunities for technology development.
Specific accountabilities include:
  • To undertake new research:
    • Characterising the technical and financial aspects of technologies relating to SSH (for example: heat pumps, heat storage, combined heat and power, district heat networks, building insulation, smart grids, etc).
    • Understanding the commercial issues around the deployment of technologies relating to SSH
    • Identifying and defining opportunities for ETI investment in specific technology development projects.
  • To build strong personal relationships with relevant technology companies (in the UK and overseas) to enable gathering of the data required for analyses.
  • To support the procurement of research and technology development projects from external contractors as required (specify, review deliverables, advise at stage gates and change points, etc).
  • To prepare papers and presentations as required to inform the wider ETI team.
  • To support the Modelling Analyst in creating a library of data sources and assumptions and maintaining it in readiness for technical peer review / audit.
  • To prepare and engage with peer review processes for data used in ETI analyses.

Desired Skills & Experience

Person Profile

The Technologies Development Engineer needs to be able to carry out detailed numerical work accurately and rapidly, and to understand the practical engineering implications of their analysis. They will need to prioritise their work and broker agreement on the best approach among SSH team members in an open and professional manner.

Qualifications:
  • Must have a degree in a relevant engineering or science subject with a strong systems flavour.
  • Should hold (or aspire to) professional (Chartered) status within their discipline.
Experience:
  • Candidates should have proven post first-degree experience of systems design, working under a recognised Design Authority, in a large and competent design group in a major consultancy or industrial group.
  • Exceptional candidates who have been awarded an EngD may be considered, provided that the subject of their Doctorate involved the design of relevant industrial systems.
  • Significant experience in technology analysis or development.
  • Experience within a technology area related to SSH (e.g. buildings, energy networks, etc) would be advantageous but not essential.

Skills:
  • Highly developed analytical skills.
  • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems.
  • Engineering design and analysis skills.
Other Requirements:
  • Must demonstrate a passion for engineering and technology.
  • The jobholder will be based at the ETI’s office in Birmingham. The nature of the role is likely to involve significant interaction with external technology companies; requiring travel within the UK and overseas.

Company Description

The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) is a public private partnership between global energy and engineering companies (BP, Caterpillar, EDF, E.ON, Rolls-Royce, Shell and the UK Government).

The ETI invests in projects to accelerate the development, demonstration and eventual commercial deployment of a focused portfolio of affordable energy technologies, which will increase energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help meet energy and climate change goals.

The ETI is currently running technology programmes in Offshore Wind, Marine, Buildings, Energy Supply and Distribution, Smart Systems and Heat, Carbon Capture and Storage, Bioenergy and Transport.
