POSITION SUMMARY

It is envisioned that this role will have the opportunity to lead multiple automation projects. We are currently seeking an experienced Instrument and Control Project Engineer for the Packaging business to be based at one of our largest European manufacturing plants in Deeside, Wales, United Kingdom (UK). Initially reporting directly to the Site Manager Deeside, this role will have as primary objectives:

  • Performing specialized process control engineering;
  • Technology change and new process control implementation;
  • Capital project management in support of manufacturing operations.

The Instrument and Control Project Engineer will effectively design and efficiently manage complex and large-scale engineering projects and proactively seek resolution on automation and engineering problems when needed. Ensuring best practices are utilized throughout full project life cycles will be critical to enabling success in this role. In order to deliver on corporate objectives, the Instrument and Control Project Engineer will need to proactively anticipate issues surrounding process troubleshooting, optimisation, design, and implementation.

Valspar continues to strengthen its manufacturing processes. Automation has been defined as a key requirement for the organization. As such, the Instrument and Control Project Engineer will lead a significant and highly complex GBP £2 million state of the art distributed control system project for the site. Important will be standardizing manufacturing processes aligned to Valspar’s global corporate methodology. While the company’s software and hardware approach is defined by corporate policies, the incumbent will need to review site processes to ensure state of the art processes, systems, and machinery development and maintenance are in place.

He / she will need to proactively design and conduct sound automation feasibility studies and process automation techniques. This will encompass failure investigations, implementing and following-up on preventive and corrective actions as necessary, preparing robust verification and qualification test requirements and reports based upon good engineering practices (GEP) and a scientific risk based approach. Utilizing a life cycle approach, the Instrument and Control Project Engineer will develop and support best practices while initiating and leading complex automation studies and projects for new processes, process changes, and application improvements for plant floor automated systems. Core will be improving safety in manufacturing and product quality and uniformity, as well as increasing production efficiency while decreasing standard costs. In addition, he / she will oversee the transfer of process automation from development to manufacturing and equipment automation change control, verification, and qualification.

Additional areas of focus will include writing verification protocols (e.g. Site Acceptance Test, commissioning and qualification) and conducting verification activities as required by the change control program; ensuring automated systems are compliant and fit for use; and analyzing systems performance data to identify trends to predict potential failures and aid in solving product and process problems. It will also be important to compile, review, and revise Manufacturing and Engineering documents for new and existing automated manufacturing systems; provide and document training of technical and production personnel in the application of new automated manufacturing systems; and identify and qualify new vendors, interface with existing vendors, and ensure delivery of quality automated systems solutions at reasonable costs.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Possess detailed understanding of PLC / DCS control (preferably Emerson Delta V), ideally in batch chemical process plant operations using ISA-S88 industry standard protocols.
  • A successful track record implementing large-scale and complex projects to schedule and budget.
  • In depth expertise in the application of broad or specialized process control engineering principles and practices in complex chemical environments.
  • Experience developing local engineering standards when needed.
  • Possess solid analytical and problem solving skills with an inherent ability to identify root cause.
  • Be comfortable operating effectively within a multi-national organization.
  • The ability to communicate assertively, effectively, and credibly across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong influencing skills within the technical and business internal and external communities to ensure business objectives are met.
  • Strength of character to ensure that within control environment, the message is delivered to the relevant parties.
  • An up to date knowledge of best safety practices in the process industry and an ability to interpret into practical application.
  • Lean Six Sigma (LSS) certification to Green Belt standard would be advantageous – having already worked in an organization focused on continuous improvement and implementing best practices.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Control & Instrumentation, Chemical or Process Engineering is preferred.
