Chief Engineer- Lead Structural Engineer (Contract)-1202771

This contract position will be located in Vancouver, Canada for 6-9 months, then relocate to Arequipa, Peru for 2+ years.

Under limited supervision plan, organize, manage and evaluate designated engineering projects and programs, ensuring the successful conclusion of all phases within an appropriate time and at appropriate cost.

Additional responsibilities:

• Supervise, enhance and monitor designated engineering practices for the site.
• Report environmental compliance issues and make recommendations to appropriate site management for correction.
• Supervise or review, investigate and develop appropriate recommendations regarding planned engineering projects. Supervise or may serve as Project Manager or technical expert, on large/complex site construction, expansion or modification engineering projects.
• Provide guidance and counsel to the site management team on applicable programs, practices and existing/proposed local, state and federal regulations.
• Evaluate and administer contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment.
• Contribute to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for designated engineering areas.
• Represent the site on Company sponsored steering teams, such as Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Environmental Steering Team.
• Works on complex issues and implements solutions mostly through the determination of strategy and delegation to others in a group or functional area.
• Often collaborates with managers and/or functional or site leaders and has some interaction with external colleagues.
• Works under limited supervision and has significant latitude to set objectives, priorities and timelines that may impact a group or functional area within the company.
• Contributes to budget preparation by supplying costs and recommendations.
• Manages supervisors or mid-level professional individual contributors.
• Analyze configurations of the basic structural components of a building or other structure.
• Review the engineering calculations, MTO (material take off) of steel materials, with compilations of relevant design engineering codes calculating the pressures, stresses and strains that each component, such as a beam or lintel, will experience from other parts of the structure due to human use or environmental pressures such as weather or earthquakes.
• Review the design of engineered structures and buildings made of steel, concrete, retaining walls, and others, to see how their inclusion may necessitate a change of structural design.
• Liaise with other designers, including architects, civil engineers, and other discipline engineers to agree on safe designs and their fit with the aesthetic concept of the construction and fit for purpose.
• Examine structures at risk of collapse and advising how to improve their structural integrity, such as recommending removal or repair of defective parts or rebuilding the entire structure.
• Review drawings, specifications and computer models of structures for building contractors.
• Liaise with construction contractors to ensure that newly erected structures/ buildings are structurally sound.
• Apply expert knowledge of the forces that act on various structures using computers and computer-aided design (CAD) technology for simulation purposes.
• Hands on knowledge as a user of structural engineering software.
• Strong applied knowledge and skills of change management in an EPCM works at engineering and construction stages.
• Demonstrated skills in safe work practices in engineering work.

Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline and seven (7) years experience in structural engineering or related scientific field, including lead or supervisory experience.
• Analytical and research abilities. Experienced managing large/complex engineering projects.
• Supervising and training abilities.
• Travel capabilities within South America, to/from South America & North America.
• Bilingual capabilities in English/Spanish preferred.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
